Frequently Asked Questions

Core Concepts

What is postive reinforcement training?

Positive reinforcement dog training is a method that focuses on rewarding a dog for exhibiting desired behaviors to increase the likelihood that those behaviors will be repeated. Rewards can include treats, toys, praise, petting, or access to favorite activities. The core idea is that when a dog does something right, they receive something they like, which motivates them to repeat that behavior in the future.

How does reinforcement differ from punishment-based training methods?

Positive Reinforcement focuses on rewarding desired behaviors to increase their frequency. Rewards can include treats, praise, toys, or anything the dog finds motivating.

Punishment  can suppress unwanted behaviors but may also increase anxiety, fear, or aggression in dogs, and can damage the trust between dog and handler.

Is positive reinforcement effective for all dogs and behaviors?

The idea that positive reinforcement "doesn't work for some dogs" is often due to improper application rather than a flaw in the method itself.

The science of behavior applies universally, but training plans may need to be customized for each dog's needs and the specific behavior being targeted.

WHAT KINDS OF REWARDS DO YOU USE IN TRAINING?

Food, toys, praise, attention, games, and life rewards are all used in positive reinforcement training. The key is to observe what your dog values most and use a mix of these rewards to keep training engaging and effective. Many trainers start with food treats for new behaviors and gradually incorporate other rewards like praise, toys, or play as the dog becomes more proficient.

DO YOU USE ANY EQUIPMENT OR TOOLS IN YOUR TRAINING?

Recommended Training Equipment:

  • Martingale collars are widely recommended for training because they provide gentle, limited tightening when a dog pulls, preventing escape without causing pain or injury.
  • Long Leads are excellent for recall training and practicing commands at a distance.
  • Harnesses with a front-clip are great for dogs who need extra control without causing injury to their necks or trachea.
  • Training Mats provide a designated spot for dogs to relax and feel comfortable.
